Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Herbal Extract?

Our herbal extracts are a concentrated liquid contained in one, two and four ounce dropper bottles. They are made by harvesting plant parts at their peak potency and soaking them in alcohol for eight or more weeks to extract the active constituents. Alcohol is an excellent solvent because it is food grade and can extract herbal constituents like resins and alkaloids that are poorly soluble in water. After a period of weeks, the herbal mixture is strained and the plant parts are removed, leaving behind a concentrated liquid.

What is Bioregional Herbalism?

Bioregional Herbalism is a location based practice of wild crafting and farming plants that grow native and abundant to certain regions of the world.  We practice Bioregional Herbalism in the Pacific Northwest and even more specifically, in southern Oregon’s Illinois Valley.

What is the difference between wildcrafted and garden grown?

When we wildcraft herbs, we go out into the forest with scissors and baskets to find wild-growing medicine plants in their native habitat. We ethically harvest these plants. Our wild crafted plants are most commonly found in the forest, along running rivers, in sunny fields and rolling meadows. We also offer an abundance of garden grown plant extracts. This means that I am intentionally cultivating a library of medicinal plants on the same land where my family lives, here in Southern Oregon’s Illinois Valley. Many of our garden grown varieties grow wild in our region, while other plant varieties we offer are native to other regions of the country like the Appalachia.

Is this something you studied in school?

I attended the Colorado School of Healing Arts in Denver, Colorado in 2006-2009. Here I studied many holistic modalities and paths to health and wellness. One of the most impactful programs I completed was medical herbalism and aromatherapy. This was the beginning of my lifelong journey with plant remedies. From The Colorado School of Healing Arts in Denver, I moved to Northern California and began my life’s work, farming medicinal plants. I have no credentials that allow me to diagnose, prescribe or treat any illness or disease. Our plant extracts best serve as nutritional supplements and complimentary medicine.

Are you a medical doctor?

No, I am not a medical doctor, which is why I never diagnose, recommend, treat or cure any illness. The information I share is intended for educational and entertainment purposes only. They are not intended to take the place of a medical professional. These practices are out of my scope of expertise. I am a farmer and an herbalist. The bulk of my education was learned through the apprentice model and is not recognized or accredited by any authoritative body or organization. My website and online store contain general information about medicinal plants and do not cover all possible contraindications, side effects, or drug interactions. Please consult with a medical professional before making decisions about your health.

How do I use these products?

Our herbal extracts come with convenient dropper tops so you can easily and accurately choose the right dose for your body. Alcohol based extracts are most easily absorbed by the body when diluted in a splash of water. One ‘dropperful’ equals about 25-30 drops. When you squeeze the rubber bulb, the dropper fills about halfway up. Dosage guidelines are included on each bottle.

Do these products have an expiration date?

None of our products have a printed expiration date, but their longevity depends on which product you’ve chosen and how you store it. Our extracts are incredibly shelf stable when stored in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight. We expect them to retain their potency for 5 years or even more when stored properly.

How do I determine the dosages for children?

As a general rule, I give babies under two years old 1-3 drops of extract. For children ages 2-6, I give 5-10 drops. Children 6 and older can generally take 10-20 drops. These are general guidelines and will vary depending on which product you choose.

Are these products safe to use on pets?

Generally speaking, herbal extracts are safe for people and pets. Your pet may prefer the extract in their water bowl or in a little bit of milk.

Do you make non-alcohol based extracts?

No, I do not make non-alcohol based products at this time, though we hope to continually expand our plant offerings. Look out for healing salves, herbal oils, herbal honeys and glycerine extracts coming from the House of Hens and Grit in the near future.

Do you offer any bulk discounts?

Right now we offer our herbal extracts in one, two, four, eight and sixteen ounce dropper bottles. We offer a small discount when purchasing each size up. I do not offer additional bulk discounts on our website at this time. Please contact us via email for any special requests. Wholesale options are available.
